Can F1 Put On A Better Show In Australia?
The Bahrain Grand Prix was supposed to set the 2010 season off with a bang. It was more like a whimper. Now it is Australia’s turn. Will things be different? We are about to see.The race down under used to be the first of the year. It also used to be one of the more exciting ones. Road racing often does not lend itself to much excitement, but Australia has always been a collection of crashes, failures and mayhem. Last year, we even had “lie-gate” with Lewis Hamilton thrown in.
The 2010 version is a complete mystery at this point. The question is whether the race will have passing and the like or be boring as sin as we saw with Bahrain. Given all the criticism and experience gained by the drivers in Bahrain, you have to think this one is going to be a bit better. Drivers now know it is pretty much up to them to advance. The other teams aren’t going to fall apart with the possible exception of Red Bull which seems to live on the edge. It’ll be interesting to watch.
Driver To Watch – Mark Webber
This is a big weekend for Webber. He is 33 and of course an Aussie. Rumors are circulating that his seat could be getting hot with a certain Raikkonen re-entering F1 in 2010. If so, this is the time that Webber has to do it. He has the car. He is a wildly inconsistent driver, but hopefully this weekend will be his good side.
Team To Watch – Mercedes
Schumacher. Brawn. Rosberg. Mercedes. It had the makings of a power team, but the first race showed it to be fourth out of the top four teams. It is very early in the season, but it would be good for Mercedes to show that 2010 was not a one off.
Let the racing begin!
