Fired Up For The Start of The 2010 Formula One Season
A long winter has passed and the start of the 2010 Formula One season is just around the corner with the first race this weekend in…Bahrain. Bahrain? Well, at least we are under way!The 2010 season is shaping up to be an incredible one. We have four world champions on the grid with Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and, of course, the return of some bloke named Schumacher. Even better, we have two of them on the same team – McLaren – which is setting up to be a soap opera that should have high ratings. While these drivers and their teams will be bearing the headlines all year long, the rather ironic thing is none of them appear to be the team to beat!
2010 is looking like the season of Red Bull Racing for all the world. Schumacher may be the greatest German driver ever in F1, but Sebastian Vettel has the look of someone who will end up challenging him for that position. Don’t think for a second that Schumacher doesn’t realize as much. Not only is he back, but you can expect him to be looking to teach Sebastian a thing or two out on the track. The Mercedes, however, does not seem to have the pace of the Red Bull, so it may be a huge task.
2010 may also be the year that we see the return of the big teams. 2009 was odd in that both McLaren and Ferrari were less than stellar. Okay, they both stunk. McLaren rallied a bit at the end of the year, but many are wondering how the team will look now that Mercedes has walked away and a driver conflict is sure to happen. Could this be the year we see McLaren really start to slip? It will be interesting to watch to say the least.
And what of Ferrari? The Schumacher bunch are now all gone. The team was dreadful in 2009, and there is much to be proved in 2010. Can the team swing it? Early testing seems to suggest that Ferrari is the team closest to Red Bull. This is the time of the year where drivers are in full PC mode, but Fernando Alonso has blown this off by stating the new Scuderia effort is the best car he has ever driven. Those are bold words and it will interesting to see how the racing goes for the team in red.
Then there are the also rans. The new teams on the grid are all privateers seeking to replace the manufacturers who left/were run out of the sport. Lotus is one, but should be forced to change its name since it is a crime against nature to use one of the historically famous names in the sport. The Americans were coming, but ran out of money and are now hoping to delay till 2011. All and all, the privateers look to be as much as five seconds off the pace, which really makes a mockery of the field.
The one good thing about the 2010 season is it appears to be wide open. We have new driver lineups, new teams, new scoring systems and what will inevitably be a lot of stubborn drivers trying to share the same piece of road. I for one can’t wait!
Viva la Formula One!
