2010 Canadian Grand Prix Preview
After a year off the schedule, the Canadian Grand Prix is coming up on June 13, 2010. This year promises to be an exciting race as we cover in this preview. How time away makes the heart grow fonder! Canada was off the 2009 calendar, but is hopefully back with a vengeance this year. Home to long fast straights and wild crashes like Kubica flying through the air in what appeared to be a death spiral in his BMW, it is a race that will be fast.
Teams On Top
Did you like Turkey? Well, Canada is shaping up to be very similar. The Red Bulls will be blindingly fast because…well, they are fast everywhere. Whether they will last or drive each other off the road is another issue, but expect both to be up front.
Canada is a track that fits McLaren well to. The F-Duct makes the car fast on the straights and Canada has a long, long one. There are plenty of slow corners as well, which means the Silver Arrows might not be as fast as they were in Turkey, but I still like there chances.
Teams in Trouble
Ferrari and Mercedes seem to be regressing. What is interesting is Ferrari admit it, but Mercedes claims to be picking up pace despite finishing 40 seconds behind the front runners. Not a lot of time has passed since Turkey, but it will still be interesting to see if these two teams can make any headway. Personally, I doubt it.
Driver to Watch
The Matador. Fernando Alonso was a revelation at the start of the season, but has turned into a bit of a pumpkin as the season progresses. His gaff in Monaco practice was unacceptable and the drive in Turkey was hardly impressive. While he probably does not have the car to make much of a move in Canada, the Spaniard needs to show he is fully committed to the effort.
Predicted Winner
It is easy to pick the Red Bulls, but I’ll give them a rest this week. My pick is Jenson Button. He’ll have the pace of the McLaren and his smooth driving seems a better match for the track than Hamilton’s more aggressive style.
