Lewis Hamilton Takes Predictably Wild Belgium Grand Prix at Spa
Spa is always good for a wild race and the 2010 Belgium Grand Prix lived up to expectations. Lewis Hamilton was able to take the win and ride a major shakeup in the points.
Let’s be honest. Formula 1 has some seriously bad racetracks that make for boring races. That being said, it still has some absolutely brilliant tracks that provide plenty of places to pass, unique curves and fixtures as well as a bit of the unpredictable thrown in. Spa is my favorite track on the circuit and most of the drivers seem to agree.
The 2010 race lived up to the usually expectations with rain playing less of a roll than usual. Lewis Hamilton converted a brilliant start into a rather simple win, although he had a few breathtaking moments when the idiots in the pits had him stay out on slicks in a pouring rain. Fortunately, Lewis was able to overcome his team and push himself into the lead of the points standings with his win.
The rest of the field was going through a beautiful piece of chaos. Hamilton and Webber were able to separate themselves from the field in the points as the other contenders thrashed around and failed to score points. The start of the race saw the old pro Rubens Barrichello apparently forget his breaking point and plow into Fernando Alonso. Alonso was lucky to survive, but ended up in the back of the pack. He worked his way up into eighth before going off and crashing. It was a brutal day for his championship hopes, but nothing compared to the Button/Vettel disaster.
Button made a brilliant start to the race and was eventually able to get up to second. He then developed understeer and was holding up the field something fierce. Vettel attempted to pass him and then lost the car which plowed into the side of Button. Button was out and Vettel received a penalty that killed his race. While I feel bad for Button, the penalty should not have been given. Vettel’s car clearly just lost grip and there was nothing he could do. If there was a penalty for this, why wasn’t Barrichello penalized for hitting Alonso. Come on, let them race!
Drivers of the Race – Hamilton
While others proved they were not up to the task, Hamilton drove a solid race and took a well deserved win. Spa and Monza are the last two tracks that favor the McLaren. He must win both to realistically have a chance against Webber in the Championship. One down and one to go. Well done, Lewis.
Poor Drive of the Race – None
Nobody was really ghastly. You might suggest Vettel, but how is it his fault when his car loses grip on a rain soaked course? The penalty he received was undeserved. It was a bad race for Vettel, but mostly just down to bad luck. Other than that, nobody really had a stinker that they caused on their own.
Good Team of the Race – Mercedes
It has been an ugly year for Ross Brawn and Mercedes. Today was better. Although they cannot compete with the front runners, the fact Rosberg and Schumacher came from 14th and 21st to finish in the points is commendable.
Poor Team of the Race – McLaren
Talk about sabotage! Who had the brilliant idea to leave Hamilton out in the rain? They should be fired! A sure win was almost turned into something disappointing.
Overall
Spa separated the men from the boys for the championship. It appears to be down to Hamilton and Webber unless both have zero point finishes in the last six races. My money is on Webber. I don’t think he is a better driver, but the Red Bull should be dominant on five of the remaining six tracks. Hamilton must win in Monza to have any chance of claiming his second championship. The track should favor McLaren, so it is time for him to shine.
