The Ego of Max Mosley Declared Ninth Planet In Solar System
FIA President Max Mosley has thrown a snit that may throw Formula One back into a civil war. The reason? His feelings have been hurt. Ah, the teenage years are so tough.
Formula One is the land of gigantic egos. Think of the most arrogant person you know and multiply that by a few million and you are getting close to the size of these egos. The civil war of Formula One was declared over on the brink of total disaster. Now? Now it is about to fall apart because one of the egomaniacs in question – FIA President Max Mosley – has had his feelings hurt.
The civil war was ugly and turned into a personality blast. Against all odds, the top teams staid united in the Formula One Teams Association better known as FOTA. The teams started planning a breakaway series and essentially called the bluff of the FIA, Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone.
So, what happened? The FIA, Mosley and Ecclestone folded despite all their efforts to break the unity of the teams. How bad was it? The teams received everything they wanted. The much despised budget cap was scrapped completely. There will be no rule changes between this year and 2010. KERS appears to be a bad idea that will be put to rest. Mosley even agreed to go into retirement. It was a slam dunk for the teams by any measure and reported as such.
The ego of Max Mosley is such that he can’t stand to lose. You have to have big ones to even go in front of the press after his little whipping event last year that was in the news. Well, he has one. The fact that he lost this war and the teams more or less said as much is just too much. Mad Max Mosley can’t let it go. His ego simply will not allow for such a result. As a result, he is now throwing insults around and threatening to run for reelection in late 2009 as president of the FIA. In short, he is threatening to break the agreement.
So, where will this all go? Well, it could definitely blow up again. I personally doubt that will happen. The reason? Bernie and the commercial rights holders. They are in it deep Ferrari, McLaren, BMW, Brawn and so on leave the sport. They’ll let Max Mosley wail away like a spurned high school girl, but they are not idiots. Mosley will go out the door. Whether he does it with some grace or without is up to him.
